Seven place at Hawaiʻi state HOSA events

Out of the 15 students who represented KS Maui at the state Health Occupations Students of America State Competition, 7 will move on to the national meet in Orlando, Fla., this summer.
Students competed in events such as Extemporaneous Health Poster, Researched Persuasive Speaking, Bio-medical Debate, Public Service Announcement, Trans-cultural Healthcare, Medical Photography and Epidemiology at the Hawai’i Convention Center on Oʻahu, Feb. 19.
“I feel really good about the seven finalists,” club adviser Mrs. Brandy Cajudoy said. “Especially for Regina Kuhia because epidemiology is her senior project topic and Joelene Kua’ana because trans-cultural healthcare is a brand new event nationally, so it will be exciting to see what happens.”
The other club advisers include life science teachers Ms. Malia Panglao and Ms. Brooke Nacua, who accompanied Mrs. Cajudoy on the trip.
The group arrived on Oʻahu on Tuesday, Feb. 18, and prepared for a full day of competition the next day.
Most of the events involved two rounds. Contestants had to qualify in the first round to move on to the second.
The fifteen students who represented KSM at the competition were sophomores Faith Owan, Kiana Kanoa and Sanoelani Lanias; juniors Carolynn Krueger, Joelene Kua’ana, Jackie Gorman, myself, and Regina Kuhia; and seniors Kiana Antonio, Kiana-Lei Chang, Kiana-Lei Sniffen, Ciana Ruidas, Mahina Bantilan, Shaina Hipolito and Shane Nae’ole.
On Thursday, the students attended an awards ceremony announcing the first-, second- and third-place winners, who would be moving on to the national competition in Orlando.
Of the fifteen students from KS Maui, seven placed.
Those seven were
- Krueger, first place, Research Persuasive Speaking
- Kua’ana, first place, Trans-cultural Healthcare.
- Owan, Kanoa, Lanias, second place, Bio-medical Debate (team event)
- Gorman, second place, Extemporaneous Health Poster
- and Kuhia, seocnd place in Epidemiology.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to go and represent not only my school, but the state of Hawai’i,” Kuhia said of the upcoming national competition this summer. “It is a dream come true for me.”
