Co-owner Shannon Murphy also works as the cashier at Sip Me!, a new coffee shop in Makawao. Serving coffee, tea, smoothies, pastries, cookies and other treats, the business has been doing well since opening this summer.

MAKAWAO–There’s a new coffee shop, and it’s called Sip Me!

Co-owners Shannon Murphy and Laura Wentworth opened the doors this summer on June 29. Even though it’s only been a few months, Sip Me has already found success in the Maui community.

“We had actually projected for worst-case scenario, and we’re doing much better than that,” Shannon Murphy said. “We’re doing well so far.”

The idea for the shop began with the owners wanting to start something of their own in order for them to gain more “financial freedom and flexibility.” They chose Makawao town for the coffee shop’s location because of their love for the community there.

“We like how Makawao is nice. It’s quaint, and the spot that we got, we just figured would be perfect for a coffee shop,” Murphy said. “…Makawao has been really great to us.”

Sip Me offers coffee, tea, juice, smoothies, a variety of pastries, and more. The coffee is organic, there are gluten-free and vegan options, and the juices are meant to have health benefits, with the incorporation of power veggies like ginger and kale.

In addition to these healthy options, Sip Me stays true to what you’d expect of a coffee shop.

“There’s also that side of it that, you know, if somebody just wants to have a good chocolate croissant, go ahead and—calories and all—have a good chocolate croissant,” Murphy said.

A big part of Sip Me’s appeal is its unique look, with succulents in teacups scattered about the shop, pops of bright colors, and local art on the walls. Shannon Murphy says that a lot of the decorations and furniture came from the websites All Modern and Etsy. Pinterest also served as an inspiration for design, as well as a guide, with creating the pallet wall in the shop.

Senior Makayla Imaoka has visited Sip Me, and she describes the decorations as “simplistic and modern.” She’s one of many fans of this new addition to Maui’s coffee scene.

“It’s awesome,” Imioka said. “It’s delicious; all the stuff is so good.”

Murphy said that the purpose of Sip Me is to give back to the community by offering a space for people to meet, grab a snack, and have a good time.

“We wanted them to have a feeling of being at home,” Murphy said. “That they can just kind of relax, you know, that they feel like they’re in a nice, clean, comfortable environment.”
