A true East meets West experience was what the students of both Kamehameha Schools Maui and Yew Chung International School of China experienced in a culturally diverse lunchtime Wednesday at KSM’s high school.
The students of KSM got a firsthand experience of the Chinese culture as they watched the dancing and martial arts performances by sixth graders from Yew Chung International School of China.
Junior Heather Kahalehili of KS Maui said, “Their dances were very interesting, and I felt like they showed passion in their dance.”
Yew Chung’s motto is “East meets West,” and the school tries to immerse their students in both Western and Eastern cultures as much as they can. The group of Chinese students was led by various teachers from the four different Yew Chung campuses in China. At these schools, students learn to become bilingual in Chinese and English as well as give back to society with the talents they fully develop at the school.
“It’s cool to see other kids like the Japanese, Chinese, and the Maori kids come and visit the school and share with us a little bit about their culture” said Junior Kailee Dudoit of KS Maui.
