JV girls volleyball digs in, wins against Nā Aliʻi

The junior varsity girls volleyball Warriors beat King Kekaulike, 2-1, on Friday, September 18 at Ka’ulaheanuiokamoku gymnasium.
This game was a “pink out” game, which encouraged fans and participants to wear pink to spread awareness about breast cancer. Students decorated the gym with pink balloons, ribbons, and posters before the game began.
The first set was rocky for the Warriors. Nā Aliʻi took the first point. Kamehameha Maui began fighting back when the score was 11-12. Kimani Fernandez-Roy’s serve tied the score at 12. Later, a spike by Aleʻa Cervantes tied the score at 14, and Sage Kanemitsu’s hit at 15-16 tied the score once again. In the end, the Warriors lost the first set, 21-20.
“[The girls played] okay. They struggled in the first set… they needed to talk more. They needed to pass the ball more,” said Coach Dukie Josiah.
The second set started with Inez Garcia serving. Fernandez-Roy, Cervantes, and Garcia consistently put up points for the Warriors in kills and aces, and KS Maui won the second set, 21-5.
“When we got to the second set we were like, ‘Okay, this is our game. Let’s play our match in our home gym,’” Destynee Albiar said.
Nā Aliʻi began the third set with the ball, but in the end, Albiar’s got the winning point with a spike, ending the third set with a win at 15-7.
“I believe they had a lot of distractions going on with homecoming week, big game night, the crowd wasn’t with us… but, they fought for it and they won, I’m happy for them,” Coach Josiah said.
