JV Warriors trump Lunas in volleyball
The KS Maui junior varsity volleyball girls improved and defeated the Lunas, 2-1, in three sets at Ka’ulaheanuiokamoku Gymnasium on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The last time they played, the Warriors lost to the Lunas, 2-0.
Junior varsity coach Dukie Josiah said,”The girls are progressing. It is just a matter of keeping them focused.”
In the first set, the Warriors did not score a point until the fourth serve, which was served by sophomore Tatiana Martinez. From there the Warriors and Lunas stayed close in the amount of points earned until the set’s end, and the Lunas won, 25-23.
The Warriors surpassed Lahaina and won the second set, 25-16. The Lunas scored the first point of the second set, and throughout the beginning of the set the teams were neck and neck until they tied at 14-14.
Slowly the Lunas began to fall behind. The Warriors led the rest of the game; however, the Lunas scored two more points before the end of the set.
Sophomore Tatiana Martinez said, “The second set boosted everyone’s energy so that we could get the win and work together.”
The Warriors won the third set with a close score of 21-19. They scored the first point, and right afterwards the Lunas score their first point. The score went back and forth between the teams who always stayed within a few points of each other.
The teams tied once again at 19-19 near the set’s end, but after 2 strong serves, the Warriors won the last set, also winning the match, 2-1.
Last night’s win brings the KSM junior varsity girls to a record of five wins and four losses this season.
