Girls Basketball: Warriors fight for win against Nā Aliʻi
PUKALANI – The girls basketball team slipped by Nā Aliʻi, 55-53, at King Kekaulike High School, Dec. 28.
Throughout the game, both teams played aggressively, and the ball was never on one side of the court for too long. Seniors Kaylee Cambra and Ashley Peralta made significant contributions to Kamehameha Mauiʻs score.
“I think altogether we played as a team. We weren’t selfish with the ball and worked for the right shots. We did make some foolish fouls, but for the most part, I think we played well; however, the game shouldn’t have been that close,” Cambra said .
The first quarter ended with a score of 16-14, Nā Aliʻi in the lead. King Kekaulike’s freshman Namahana Kaʻeo-Young was an asset to her team, sinking three 3-pointers throughout the game.
In the second quarter, the score stayed close, and sophomore Tatiana Soon scored a three-pointer. The score ended, 31-30, with Warriors having that 1-point edge.
The third quarter began with a 3-pointer from Kamehameha’s Kaylee Cambra. Both teams were fighting to have the lead, but Nā Aliʻi made many steals, giving them the 46-42 lead over Kamehameha Maui.
“[The Warriors] played a great fourth quarter. They need improvement on their defense and their intensity and their effort and their energy. They gotta keep it up how they played their fourth quarter,” said assistant coach Daniel Aguirre.
The game ended with strong offense from Nā Aliʻi. The Warriors managed to get ahead by breaking through their defense and by making their free throw shots.
