The KSM girls volleyball team maintained their perfect season with a three set win over King Kekaulike last night. The Warriors struggled to gain a substantial lead in the beginning, but pulled together and won 25-15, 25-17, 25-13.
KSM let the game be up and up at the start of the first set with hitting and service errors on their part. Both teams were alert on the defense, providing scrappy playing. The Warriors cleaned up their game while Nā Aliʻi continued to make errors.
The second set began the same way and was tied at 7-7. The Warriors finally got back into the game and gained the lead with a series of back row attacks by junior Bobbi Kalama from classmate Sheylin Patao. While their hitting improved a lot from the first set, they lost a lot of points on tips. KKHS did have some communication problems and once the Warriors led 16-12, a win followed quickly.
The Warriors came out firing in the third set and didn’t delay to obtain a 5-point lead. On-point hitting by juniors Leimana Kane and Anuhea Kaʻiaokamalie helped them widen the gap to 16-9.
The Nā Ali’i team dynamic changed when their libero hurt her ankle on a scramble play. Their overpasses allowed Kane and junior Raven Poepoe to gain an advantage on the net. Junior Kailee Tobaco also had a 5-point service run. While KSM could not finish the game immediately, they did not let KKHS hold the ball for long either.
The KSM JV girls volleyball team also added another win to their record with a 25-22, 25-21 win.
They came from behind in the first set and tied the game at 11-11. It was anyone’s game from that point. The second set also could’ve belonged to anyone. Long service runs from freshmen Tiare Laufou, Kelia Nesmith and Savannah Dudoit got them ahead quickly.
The Warriors play Baldwin High School next on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Ka’ulaheanuiokamoku, the high school gym. Junior Varsity plays at 10:30 a.m; varsity at noon.
