Vice-president Keahinuinakeakua Johnson lays out the artwork for a poster promoting the Life Skills Club for club sign-ups coming up Tuesday, August 30. The Life Skills Club would like to provide opportunities for students to learn and apply skills they will need after graduating high school.

Sophomore Kiana Liu teamed up with some friends and created a new club–the Life Skills Club.

Liu is the president, and the other officers are vice president Keahinuinakeakua Johnson, secretary Kaila Kalauokaaea-Kahele, treasurer Jillian Ikehara, and historian Analicia Kapua.

All new clubs need to meet certain requirements, and one of them is to have an adviser. Liu enlisted the help of ninth- and tenth-grade counselor Ms. Malorie Chong to help her complete the steps to becoming a club by agreeing to be the club’s adviser.

Ms. Chong said she’s “very excited” about the club, which she believes can be beneficial to all students at Kamehameha Maui. She has had past experience with taking a home economics class when she was in school and said that she learned a lot of skills there that she has used throughout her life. For instance, in Home Economics she learned how to cook, change a tire, and do a bit of sewing.

Liu said that in the Life Skills Club, students will be able to learn self-defense, cooking and finance with KS Maui’s own teachers after school. She believes that students can learn skills that they will be able to use when they go to college and start their lives away from their parents. They would also like to go on field trips, even trips off island.

Watch for Liu and her new club at Club Sign-Up Day next Tuesday, September 30, at lunch in front of the counseling center, and sign up to learn some real-life skills you can use as an adult.
