Senior Austin Peters looks to pass to a teammate in the Maui Interscholastic League finals at the Lahaina Civic Center Feb. 6. The Warriors lost and will face the Maui High Sabers tonight, Feb. 7, for the second Maui seed in the HHSAA tournament.

LAHAINA– Lahainaluna’s boys basketball team defeated the Kamehameha Warriors, 60-28, in the Maui Interscholastic League Division I tournament last night earning the league championship at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Within the first quarter of the game, the Lunas started off strong with a leading score of 19 while the Warriors followed closely 3 points behind. The Warriors’ plays, both defense and offense, were strong in the first half of the game.

“The hard part was just coming out after halftime and starting that back up again,” junior KSM forward Colton Luke said.

In the third quarter the Lunas picked up their speed and got ahead of the Warriors with a 23-point lead. Senior Austin Peters scored a 3-pointer within the last quarter of the game adding points to the Warriors’ score.

“They did really well, they met our expectations and worked hard, and that’s all we can ask for. I’m only on my second season, and I’m trying to develop our players to play how we want them to play,” Head Coach Angus Peters III said.

The Warriors displayed great sportsmanship after the game and “definitely prepared [for their game against Maui High]. They’re our rivals and if we win tomorrow we go to States for the first time,” Luke said.

Come support the Warriors in their last game on Maui tonight at 7 pm. The Warriors will play the Maui High Sabers at the Lahaina Civic Center. The game will decide who will compete as the second MIL seed at the Hawaiʻi High School Athletics Association boys basketball state tournament, to be held on O’ahu next week.
