Girls volleyball took down the Sabers in a seemingly effortless three-set sweep Thursday. The home gym was overflowing with green to commemorate the team seniors and their impact on the program. They ended the night with a heartfelt ceremony.
“Making varsity my freshman year” was senior Archer Fabrao’s favorite memory during her volleyball journey. She’s made the MIL All-Star first team every year as an outside hitter.
Lilinoe Peterson was another senior honored.
“I’d say my favorite memory would be our recent trip to Hilo. It was so much fun to bond with my teammates and experience different teams outside of MIL,” she said.
There was a common theme of relationship within the seniors’ speeches, and their strong team bond is evident not only on the court, but in school as well.
Though not one of the on-court players, another important senior celebrated last night was manager Peyton Cabudol.
“To be a manager, it’s very fun, and I enjoy hanging around with these girls that love me and support me and just bonding with the coaches as well,” she said about her reasons for serving the team.
In Thursday’s game, team captain Ryan ‘Hiʻilei’ Alo led with 49 assists. She said that her biggest inspirations are her coaches.
Coach, kumu and KSM alumna Sienna Davis said that the team’s success comes from a long-lasting bond.
“They’ve been playing for quite a while too, which makes a difference, and you can see that cohesiveness on the court when they play,” she said.
But for all their cohesiveness, every individual player brings something to each game.
“I feel like every senior is different in their own way, through personality and through the way they play,” Coach Sienna said. “They’ve grown to be great leaders on and off the court, leading the team to victories but also leading us in positivity.”
The deep connection and leadership mentality helped the Warriors secure their win 3-0. They are hoping to ride that success into their next match-up with King Kekaulike.
With an almost perfect season, the girls are 1-1 against Nā Aliʻi after the upcountry rivals handed them their only defeat, Sept. 18. They hope to break that tie at Tuesdayʻs game.
